There are controlled substances that are most commonly used at various dance parties and clubs. Drugs such as; amyl nitrates or poppers, ketamine hydrochloride (special k), MDMA ecstasy, mehthylenedioxy, methamphetamine, desoxyn, crystal meth, speed, bennies, etc all have serious adverse effects. These drugs can cause feelings of heightened pleasure, increased energy, acute awareness, etc. On the other hand and what makes these drugs so dangerous are the side effects that can result immediately or from prolonged chronic use. Symptoms include carelessness, oblivious to danger, warped or distorted judgment, and loss of inhibitions, cardiovascular or nervous system damage. Amyl nitrate was originally intended to treat angina, so it directly affects the heart and prolonged use can cause respiratory failure and death. Ketamine is an anesthetic developed for human and animal use for minor surgical procedures. Controlled as intended, it causes increased heart rate and delusion between reality and sensation, similar to nitrous oxide (laughing gas). In larger doses a person slips into a more hallucinogenic, deeply detached dreamy state, otherwise known as the “k-hole”. In this state a user may not be able to talk or move and may slip into respiratory depression, which when mixed with alcohol can be fatal. Though the drug itself may not be addictive, the lifestyle associated with its users can be very alluring, and prolonged use can lead to neurological damage. When combined with other drugs or used in large doses this drug can be fatal. MDMA or ecstasy affects the serotonin in the brain which is responsible for mood. Most users like the affects of (empathogenesis) its ability to cause a great acceptance of oneself and others, its peaceful and loving affects (entactogenosis) which is why it’s called the “hug drug”. It is commonly used before sex to heighten the physical and psychological aspects of arousal. Smaller doses increase heart rate and increase mental awareness. Larger doses may cause severe nausea seizures, unconsciousness, even paralysis or death. Methamphetamine otherwise known as crystal meth or speed, which is a stimulant was originally developed as a treatment for various conditions such as; breathing disorders, epilepsy, obesity, depression and was an over the counter drug, at one time. Amphetamine affects the brain by releasing dopamine and inhibits cerebral neurons. This affects perception, mood, self perception and energy. Methamphetamine increases heart rate, causes the body to work harder, gives the user the illusion that they are stronger and causes euphoria. High doses and prolonged use can severely impair judgment, and cause disorganized behavior, like in someone who has schizophrenia. This is by no means a comprehensive picture of all of the possible symptoms in everyone who uses these drugs. This description is intended to educate and inform anyone who is looking for help for themselves or a loved one. One thing all these drugs have in common is that they are dangerous and potentially deadly. The amount of deaths in 2010 from chronic prolonged drug use is alarming. Anyone who is using these drugs even just for escape or to party may have internal conditions that can be treated and help the person return to sane and healthy living. There may or may not be a cure for chemical dependency, however the symptoms associated with its chronic use is certainly treatable and healthy, happy sober living is possible more importantly, untimely death is not necessary.
